The small town of Emmitsburg is located in Frederick County, Maryland, just south of the Mason-Dixon line forming the border with Pennsylvania. Emmitsburg covers a mere 1.5 square miles of land, home to an estimated population of just over 3,000 people.
Emmitsburg was founded in 1785 and named for William Emmit, then later incorporated in 1825. Today the town is home to Mount St. Mary’s University as well as two Catholic pilgrimage sites: the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, and the Basilica and National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. The National Emergency Training Center (NETC) operates in Emmitsburg, including the Emergency Management Institute and the National Fire Academy.
